Exmoor in Spring photography workshop

Rated 5 out of 5

I attended the Exmoor in spring course late May 2023. We all met at Tarr steps and took many photos down thru the woods on the riverbank. Moved onto the Moors after then Watersmeet finishing up at sunset in the Valley of the Rocks. It was a memorable day, the weather helped. Always interesting to see how other photographers tackle subjects. Nigel was on hand to give his expert advice. This is the second one day course with Nigel I have attended. Thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Spring Garden Photography workshop

Rated 5 out of 5

I attended Nigel’s Spring Garden photography workshop at RHS Rosemoor and found it educational and enjoyable. It was not the best day weather wise with intermittent rain , but we were able to take some great photos. I have visited the Garden on many times but with Nigel’s guidance took some interesting photos of the smaller parts, structure and buildings, something I will use when visiting other gardens.

Garden photography course

Rated 5 out of 5

I attended Nigel’s Spring 2023 course at the beautiful RHS Rosemoor Gardens and thoroughly enjoyed it. Nigel provided the perfect balance of technical guidance and support whilst out in the gardens taking our own pictures. We were a group of mixed experience and expertise however Nigel brought something for all. I am very pleased with my pictures and would definitely consider attending one of Nigel’s other courses. Who’d have thought so much enjoyment could be had in the rain. Thank you.

Wild Southwest

Rated 5 out of 5

This book provides a comprehensive exploration of the South West, in all it’s beauty and wonder, complemented by a thoughtful, incisive and informative commentary. For those that know the South West well, this book is a reminder of all of the special places and wildlife of our region, whilst for those less familiar, this is a menu of the discoveries just waiting to be made. The book makes a wonderful gift but is an ideal ‘coffee table’ book which should find itself in every waiting room and home.

Exmoor in Autumn photography course

Rated 5 out of 5

I attended Nigel’s Exmoor in Autumn photography course in October 2022 along with 6 other really friendly course members and have to say it was an extremely enjoyable and informative day with some really great locations, we started out by photographing the woodland along the banks of the river Barle and Tarr Steps, then onto open moorland at nearby Winford Hill and finishing off at Valley of Rocks near Lynton. Although the weather was not in our favour as the day progressed (however conditions were great for the early woodland shoot) with heavy rain towards the later parts of the course we still managed to shoot these stunning locations in-between showers and with Nigel’s patience, help and guidance I hopefully came away with some decent photos and a renewed enthusiasm to ‘get out and Take pictures’ even in adverse weather’ and will definitely be booking another of Nigel’s courses in 2023.

A wildlife photography course

Rated 5 out of 5

A really enjoyable and informative day seeking out the deer around Dunster and then photographing the amazing dippers at Lynmouth. So good to be guided to the right places and given tips on getting the best shots, along with other like-minded photographers. We’ve already booked another course for next year!

Dartmoor in Spring photography workshop

Rated 5 out of 5

I attended the Dartmoor in Spring one-day course, late May 2022. Thoroughly enjoyed the day which included evening low-light photography, fantastic to be up on the moors at the ‘golden hour’ (luckily we had sunshine and relatively clear skies). The afternoon was spent photographing the river Dart, varying light levels and blurring water. Nigel was very helpful and took time to explain techniques, so learnt a lot about aperture, shutter speeds, exposure plus how to check and correct exposure using Histograms. I was also happier about using my tripod after this course. Hope to do the Dartmoor in Autumn one-day course in October.

The Low Light photography course delivers exactly as intended

Rated 5 out of 5

This course eventually ran after various Covid-induced delays and was well worth waiting for. We were blessed with ideal weather conditions and Nigel indulged all participants with guidance and advice. I was pleased with most of my own attempts, although quite naturally there is room for improvement. I now feel that having participated in this course I have the confidence to try again on my own, in other words to put my learning into practice. This was indeed an enjoyable experience in a well-chosen location ( for both parts of the course – the low light & the night sky).

An informative and interesting course

Rated 5 out of 5

I took part in Nigel’s Low Light Photography Course in March ’22 and found it informative and interesting. Prior to the course, participants had been supplied with course notes that described the basics of photography, and were well worth reading/revising before the day. It was great to be able to spend some dedicated photography time with 7 friendly others, and being encouraged to try out some techniques that I had never really got to grips with. The area around Exmouth Marina also provided some really good architectural photography opportunities too in both daylight and night conditions. We were treated to a nice sunset across the River Exe plus a clear sky for some night photography at Budleigh Salterton under very dark conditions. So dark in fact that I found it very useful to have had a good idea of the location of my camera controls by feel. By 9:30pm it was getting very cold on the beach, but at the end of the day I ended up with images that I was extremely pleased with, and will be looking forward to another outing with Nigel at some point.

The only downside was that my sunglasses fell out of my bag and I couldn’t find them in the pitch black.

Learnt a lot

Rated 5 out of 5

I attended Nigel’s course on low light photography and had a very enjoyable evening in Exmouth. Nigel started with an overview of getting off the auto setting by adjusting the aperture and shutter speed. He showed us how to photograph boats and architecture around The Point to create that WOW factor. As sunset approached we moved onto the beach and got our tripods and neutral density filters out to capture stunning images. We then walked back to the harbour area to take long exposure photos. I was very much a novice in using my camera and Nigel very patiently adjusted the settings for me to ensure I didn’t miss out on these opportunities. Many thanks Nigel!

Low level lighting – An excellent insight into a difficult aspect of photography

Rated 4 out of 5

I have always struggled with low light and dusk/night time photography on my mirrorless Sony A6000 camera. Nigel helpfully provided good insight into how to improve my techniques and learn more about the camera options. The course covered later afternoon, dusk and sunset photography (at scenic Exmouth) and then over to Budleigh for some fully dark night-time shots. It is a lot of trial and error but I feel much better informed. Though a later night than planned, it is a course I would thoroughly recommend.

South Devon coast workshop

Rated 5 out of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed the Bantham workshop in April. So good to benefit from Nigel’s local knowledge and tips on the day to help make our images tell more of a story. The pre-workshop briefing sheets were a helpful foundation, a great group of fellow photographers, and some gentle critique of our efforts from Nigel afterwards made the workshop well worthwhile. So, the real test, has it made me a better photographer? Well I can genuinely say I’m thinking more about what I’m seeing through the lens, and getting more pleasure from the results.
