This Taw and Torridge estuary coastal photography course, a completely new workshop in my programme, went ahead on 9th May 2026. It was timed to coincide with a late afternoon low tide and a mid-evening sunset/dusk.

Despite a rather worrying weather forecast of heavy showers, the day passed off with some wonderful sunshine that allowed us to shoot some wonderful landscape images. Things were spoiled a little by a bank of cloud blotting out the sunset, but this gave way to a wonderful dusk, about 20 minutes after sunset.

Techniques concentrated on use of a wide-angle lens and the maximising of depth of field to ensure images were sharp from right in front of the camera all the way to the horizon. Our subject matter ranged around a disintegrating wreck, a selection of sand dunes, rotting sea defence groynes, and moored boats left high on the sands by the low tide. The last of these were our main subject matter (as foreground photographic hooks) during the sunset and dusk photography at the lovely town of Instow.

Overall, it was a hugely successful day, one which the participants enjoyed. Above is a gallery of images shot by me while running this workshop.

Thanks for visiting this page. I hope you’ll enjoy the images. If you like what you see then think about signing up to joining our mailing list (click here) and/or coming on one of our future photography workshops (click here).
