Description
Wild Southwest, is a colourful, richly illustrated introduction to southwest England’s most beautiful wild places, as well as its magnificent plant and animal wildlife. With a text that is both informative and entertaining, illustrated with Nigel’s stunning landscape and wildlife photography, this book aims both to inform and inspire, bringing to life the beauty of southwest England’s natural world.
Covering the four southwest counties of Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, environments included in this book encompass the region’s two national parks (Dartmoor and Exmoor) and its geological World Heritage Site (the Jurassic Coast), as well as a host of wider environments, ranging from Somerset’s Mendip Hills and Dorset’s chalk grasslands, to the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, the lovely Isles of Scilly, and the stunning submarine environment that surrounds the southwest peninsula.
Plant and animal wildlife ranges from bee orchids to basking sharks, the book describing and illustrating some of the most colourful and iconic species – as well as quite a few that are barely known outside specialist circles – that call southwest England home.
Overall, this book presents a wide-ranging overview of much of the best that the southwest has to offer, aimed at the general reader who has a love of the natural world in general, and of southwest England in particular.

4 reviews for Wild Southwest
This book provides a comprehensive exploration of the South West, in all it’s beauty and wonder, complemented by a thoughtful, incisive and informative commentary. For those that know the South West well, this book is a reminder of all of the special places and wildlife of our region, whilst for those less familiar, this is a menu of the discoveries just waiting to be made. The book makes a wonderful gift but is an ideal ‘coffee table’ book which should find itself in every waiting room and home.
A great book full of tantalising images with thoroughly readable and informative text. Good value, and good presentation. A pleasure to own.
A thoroughly enjoyable book to own and read, stunning imagery throughout to take you on a journey through the Southwest Peninsula. The easy style of writing, informative notes and those wonderful images throughout the book make it a difficult one to put down!
This, the first of Nigel’s ‘local to the south west’ series of photographic essays, sets the benchmark of image quality and textual back up for the rest of the series. Subtitled ‘The Landscapes and Wildlife of Southwest England’ it does exactly what it says on the tin, combining stunning landscape images set alongside some of the wildlife to be found in those landscapes. The textual back up is a series of short but adequate notes on the landscapes and habitats in the south west, along with the principal places to visit in each of the 13 areas covered in the book. Highly recommended.
