Nigel Hicks: an experienced professional photographer
One of the UK’s most experienced professional photographers
Nigel Hicks is an enormously experienced professional photographer, with over 30 years as a professional photographer. He is a Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP), the highest qualification in what is one of the UK’s leading professional photography bodies. He is also a member of the USA’s prestigious National Geographic Image Collection.
Nigel is based in Devon, in southwest England, his work consisting of a mixture of international and local UK projects. From his office in south Devon he is well positioned to provide photographic services throughout England’s southwest. Most especially, he is very conveniently located for photography projects in and around Devon’s main centres of Exeter, Torquay/Torbay and Plymouth.

As an experienced professional photographer, Nigels career has been a long one: see here what the press has said about it

A range of photographic skills
Being such an experienced professional photographer, Nigel has inevitably gained a very broad and in-depth range of photographic skills. His work covers a wide gamut that includes:
- people
- landscapes
- nature/wildlife
- architecture and interiors
This range of photographic skills is used to its fullest in the travel and tourism sector, for which he regularly shoots both internationally and across the southwest counties of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset. Photo locations regularly include hotels, holiday lets, venues and destinations, and festivals/events.

Editorial and commercial photography
Nigel’s work regularly cuts across the editorial and commercial fields. His work for the former includes a range of magazine and book publishers, while for the latter he often works for agencies, travel companies and property sales. Moreover, he also supplies a number of photo libraries, through which much of his photography is licensed for editorial and commercial use.
In addition to photography, Nigel also writes extensively for magazines, newspapers and books. His subject matter is frequently travel, the environment and wildlife, but also includes photography itself.

Photography courses, tours and talks
For the past 20 years, Nigel has worked hard to transmit many of his hard-won photographic skills to a new generation of photographers. He does this through his own programme of one-day photography workshops that take place across southwest England. Course locations are as diverse as the streets of Bath, the high moors and forests of Dartmoor or Exmoor National Parks, and the beaches, cliffs and harbours of the Devon coast.
In addition, he runs occasional photography tours, leading groups of keen photographers to a number of destinations, most especially Iceland, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Coupled with this work, Nigel has had a regular online photography talks, recordings of which can be watched on this website.

Publishing work
Linked to his editorial photography described above, Nigel’s experience has led him to set up his own publishing company, known as Aquaterra Publishing, which is slowly generating a range of books that feature both his writing and his photography. To date, all the books published by Aquaterra Publishing have been about southwest England, and include the titles Wild Southwest, Beautiful Devon, Beautiful Cornwall, Beautiful Dorset and Beautiful Somerset.

Photography and videography
Although Nigel is a highly experienced professional photographer, his work has generally focussed on stills photography. However, in recent times has he has increasingly moved into the field of video work. This has begun with the shooting of short clips to be licensed by some of the photo libraries he supplies. Much of the video work is shot using a drone.
Equipment used
Nigel uses almost exclusively Canon camera equipment for both stills and video work. At present, his cameras are:
Canon EOS 7D MkII and Canon EOS 5D MkIV. In addition, he uses a Canon Powershot G1X MkII in a housing for underwater photography.
Lenses are all Canon’s top-of-the range L series, and include the 17-40mm f/4, 24-105mm f/4 and 70-200mm f/4 IS lenses as the core of his equipment, coupled with a 100mm f/2.8 IS macro, a 300mm f/4 IS and a 24mm f/2.8 tilt-and-shift lens.
The latest addition to Nigel’s equipment list is a drone for aerial photography. For this he uses a DJI Air 3s, capable of 4K video, and providing stills up to about 150-160 MB.
