What another great coastal pbotography workshop this was! Admittedly, Coves of Cornwall’s Atlantic Coast delivered up quite a mixed bag of weather, starting off with grey skies and drizzle, but then giving way to some gloriously stormy sunshine for the evening hours, and then a wonderful Atlantic sunset.
The day was centred around the well-known fishing cove of Boscastle, on Cornwall’s northern, Atlantic coast. Our first session was in the narrow, rugged and quite hidden Rocky Valley, a tiny cove just south of Boscastle, where – despite the grey skies – we were able to photograph the restless waves rolling against the cliffs. A short distance inland from the cove a small waterfall made for an ideal subject because of those grey skies, the soft flat light making for some great images of the cascading water, free from any deep shadows on the cliffs, or burnout in the white water.
The second session saw us high on the coastal cliffs above Boscastle harbour, and it was here that the sun broke through to provide some wonderful stormy evening sunlight. In these conditions, the fiercely jagged rocks of the cliffs stood out powerfully in the low sun and against the threatening skies. This made for some quite dramatic coastal landscape scenes.
The very end of the day saw us move to another section of cliff, just to the north of Boscastle harbour. Here we were able to photograph the sun setting over the Atlantic, the final light highlighting the ruggedness and wildness of this landscape. Finally, as the light turned softer into dusk, so the views became more about silhouettes and long exposures to give a moody blurring of the waves. It was a great end to the Coves of Cornwall’s Atlantic Coast workshop.
