What to expect from this Coves of Cornwall’s Atlantic Coast workshop
This photography workshop, Coves of Cornwall’s Atlantic Coast, will explore both the cliffs and harbour around Boscastle itself, and a couple of nearby remote and little-visited coves.
The photography will encompass stunning cliff views, a sandy shoreline and a waterfall, as well as the tiny harbour scene at Boscastle. We’ll be shooting through the afternoon light and into the evening, right up until sunset over the Atlantic.
This is one of the most rugged and most beautiful parts of Cornwall’s Atlantic coast, and on this workshop you’ll get the opportunity to explore and photograph in some little-seen locations.
The footpaths we’ll be walking on during this workshop are in mostly good condition, though inevitably a few parts are a bit rough. Part of the coast path we’ll be using near Boscastle is a bit steep. Please take care to look after yourself.
What I’ll be teaching
During this workshop I’ll be aiming to teach a number of skills, as follows:
- How to make the best use of the most important features of a digital camera; eg ISO, shutter speed/lens aperture, exposure compensation, and the image histogram;
- The best use the balance between shutter speed and lens aperture to control both depth of field and the blurring or freezing of motion within the scene;
- Developing an understanding of how, when and why we need to use a tripod; setting one up in the field and making full use of it;
- Finding ways to spot potentially great image compositions within an often chaotic natural scene;
- Learning to understand the aesthetics of photographic composition, such that you’re able to create two-dimensional image compositions that capture something of the interest and beauty of the three-dimensional real world;
- Choosing the right lens to achieve the right effect, whether a wide-angle lens to accentuate diagonals and drama, or a telephoto to compress layers and enhance the sense of power and strength.
Participants should have at least an understanding of what shutter speed and lens aperture mean, plus a knowledge of how to operate their own camera in order to get at least basic images. Beyond this, the main requirements are enthusiasm, an open mind and a readiness to learn!
Note: Since we’ll be working outdoors, what we are able to do during the day is very weather-dependent. Weather conditions may make it necessary to vary the itinerary.
