This year’s ever-popular Dartmoor in Autumn photography course took place on a cloudy, but mostly dry day. For our woodland photography in the beautiful Teign Valley close to Fingle Bridge, this was absolutely perfect, providing a soft even light to the trees’ autumn colours.
Fortunately, the autumn colours were just about at their peak (although quite a few trees were still green), providing plenty of vibrantly orange or yellow foliage, much of it hanging picturesquely over the fast-flowing River Teign.
Everyone on the course had plenty of practice at creating beautiful compositions among the chaos of the trees, as well as learning to make the best use of their cameras’ most important functions.
The afternoon session was spent out on high open moors near Chagford. This is a wild and rugged environment, which on this day was windswept to the point of making it difficult to use tripods. The few hours we were here were spent photographing the landscapes in and around the Scorhill stone circle, the marshes and battered trees of Gidleigh Common, and tumbling waters of the upper River Teign.
This was a great finale to my programme of autumn 2022 photography courses. The next course will be in April 2023.
