Photography in the Isles of Scilly
An Isles of Scilly photography tour with Nigel Hicks. Three nights/four days of photography in the Isles of Scilly, a cluster of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, about 30 miles southwest of Land’s End, Cornwall’s westernmost tip. These islands are renowned for their immense beauty, stunning natural light (even in bad weather!), a beautiful garden, and diverse and marine wildlife.
During the tour we will be based on St Mary’s, the main island, but much of our time will be spent visiting some of the other islands, both inhabited and uninhabited.
Highlights will include:
● The stunning Pentle Bay, a sandy beach along the eastern shore of Tresco, one of the Scillies’ inhabited islands;
● The world-famous Abbey Garden, a beautiful and lush garden on Tresco;
● The wild rocky shore of Hell Bay on the island of Bryher;
● The rugged rocks and marine wildlife of the Western Rocks, the islands’ final western edge, fronting onto the open Atlantic.
We will also be photographing rugged coastal scenes on some of the other islands, namely St Agnes, Gugh, Samson and St Martins.

Accommodation in the Scillies
We have decided to offer this tour exclusive of accommodation, to enable those on the tour to choose the type of accommodation and level of comfort they would prefer for themselves.
We do ask you to choose accommodation in Hugh Town, the main town on St Mary’s, to ensure that everyone is close together and hence easy to organise.
We don’t promote or endorse any particular guesthouses or hotels, but to start your search you could try the following link:
Please remember that you will be responsible for paying for your accommodation, in addition to the tour fee.
Getting to and from the Scillies
Access to the Scillies is via either the ferry that runs daily (except Sundays) between Penzance (on the mainland) and St Mary’s, or via flights that connect St Mary’s with Land’s End, Newquay and Exeter.
The ferry crossing, aboard the Scillonian, takes about 2 hours 45 mins, departing from Penzance usually at about 9.15am and arriving in St Mary’s at about midday. For the return trip, the Scillonian leaves St Mary’s at about 4.30pm, reaching Penzance at about 7.15pm.
There are regular flights between St Mary’s and Land’s End Airport, taking about 15 minutes, plus less frequent trips between Newquay and Exeter.
Ferry or flight?
Of course the flights are much faster than the ferry, but the luggage allowance is restricted, which may make problems for anyone bringing camera equipment. There are no such problems with the ferry, of course, but the crossing can be quite rough if unlucky with the weather.
Also be aware that flights are regularly cancelled due to fog or low cloud. If this happens, the airline will bus you to Penzance where you will be able to catch the ferry.
Remember that, if travelling by ferry it might be necessary to stay overnight in Penzance the night before travelling to the Scillies, and possibly also on your return.
