An outline of Journey Through the Philippines
The book is divided into four sections, reflecting some of the country’s main geographical regions, namely: Luzon, Mindoro and Palawan, the Visayas, and finally Mindanao.
Within each section, a series of locations is showcased, working roughly north to south. Luzon, being the most northerly part of the country comes first, and kicks off with the remote and magnificent beaches of Pagudpud, before then passing through the historic town of Vigan and the surfing centres of San Juan and Baler. These are followed by Luzon’s mountain region, covering the city of Baguio, the forest village of Sagada, and the rice terraces of Banaue.
The raw volcanic landscapes of Mts Pinatubo and Taal make for a stunning contrast with the metropolis that is Manila, the nation’s capital.
The Philippines’ wild frontier is represented by a string of places in Mindoro and Palawan, including the magnificent island-studded bays around El Nido, Honda Bay and the Calamian Islands. These are topped-off by the scuba-diving centre of Puerto Galera and the world-famous Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
The Visayas comes over as a place of contrasts that range from the major urban centres of Cebu and Iloilo, to the stunning beaches of Siqjuijor, Bohol, Malapascua, Bantayan and Boracay. The last of these is one of the Philippines’ most magnificent beaches, and one of the country’s most popular visitor attractions.
Finally, Mindanao in the country’s far south illustrates yet more diversity, ranging from the cities of Davao and Zamboanga to the stunning coastal and mountain landscapes of Camiguin Island, and the surfing beaches of Siargao.
