Join Nigel for five days of landscape, wildlife and garden photography in the Isles of Scilly, one of the UK’s most beautiful collections of islands.
The Scillies are a nature photographer’s dream, a place of wild coastal landscapes and seascapes, a wealth of marine wildife, and the world-famous Abbey Gardens.
We’ll be based on St Mary’s, the main island, but each day we’ll travel by boat out to at least one of the outer islands to explore their photographic opportunities. A few highlights of the five days will include:
Our base will be the friendly and attractive Wingletang Guest House, a Georgian town house in the heart of Hugh Town, St Mary’s main settlement, and just a few hundred yards from the harbour and its inter-island ferries.

The Isles of Scilly are a magnificently beautiful collection of islands lying in the Atlantic Ocean about 30 miles southwest of Land’s End.
Although the archipelago consists of hundreds of islands, islets and rocks, only five are inhabited, with the main island St Mary’s, home to most of the 2000 population. The other inhabited islands are Tresco, St Martin’s, Bryher and St Agnes.
The landscapes within the archipelago’s sheltered aquamarine waters are typified by long, curving, sandy bays, punctuated by rocky outcrops and reefs. Those areas exposed to the Atlantic are lined with solid, barren granite ‘walls’ interspersed with rugged, wave-swept islands.
The uninhabited islands are ruled by wildlife, mainly marine species that include hundreds of Atlantic Grey Seals and thousands of birds that include cormorants, shags, fulmars, gannets, guillemots, razorbills and puffins.
The Scillies’ biggest manmade attraction is the lovely Abbey Gardens, set in a sheltered location on Tresco island. Billed as a sub-tropical garden, it comes complete with large palm trees, and is one of the only opportunities in the UK to see plants from 80 countries, including Brazil, the Canaries, New Zealand and South Africa growing in the open air, a tribute to the islands’ very mild climate.
All the islands are traffic-free, with the exception of St Mary’s, which does have a small number of vehicles, so this is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the modern world. A network of ferries and tour boats connect the islands, making it relatively straightforward to move around.
Transport between the islands is via a comprehensive network of passenger ferries. On the islands, the lack of vehicles means that walking rules, so any exploration of the Scillies involves plenty of walking. Please bear this in mind when deciding whether to sign up for this tour.
A daily ferry (except Sundays), the Scillonian, connects St Mary’s with Penzance on the Cornish mainland, the one-way passage taking a little less than three hours.
Alternatively, there are regular flights to St Mary’s from Exeter, Newquay and Land’s End.
