Six days/five nights spent exploring and photographing the rugged Snaefellsnes peninsula on Iceland’s west coast in company with Nigel Hicks, a leading travel and landscape photographer, and a member of National Geographic Creative.
Sept/Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik, followed by late afternoon/early evening photography of some of the city’s architectural highlights. Accommodation in Reykjavik.
Sept/Day 2: Drive northwards to the Snaefellsnes peninsula, finishing in the village of Grundarfjördur. Late afternoon and evening photographing some of the coastal inlets and mountains, Mt Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss Falls. Plus night sky photography if weather conditions allow. Accommodation in Grundarfjördur.
Sept/Day 3: Early morning photography of Mt Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss Falls, followed by exploration and photography of the harbour town of Stykkisholmur and the surreal Berserkjahraun lava field. Accommodation in Grundarfjördur.
Sept/Day 4: Weather-permitting, we drive up to the glaciers on the slopes of Mt Snaefellsjökull, and then cross over to the south side of the Snaefellsnes peninsula. We then visit the magnificent lava cliffs and natural sculptures along the coast at such places as Arnastapi and Dritvik. The day finishes with dusk and night photography of the coastline and night sky. Accommodation in or near Arnastapi.
Sept/Day 5: The day starts with photography along the western tip of the Snaefellsnes peninsula, followed by a detour inland, away from the peninsula, to the lovely Hraunfossar Falls and the nearby Barnafoss Falls. From here the road gives a taste of the wild, rugged interior Highlands, skirting past the Langjökull icecap as it cuts through the Kaldidalur valley, heading southwards back towards Reykjavik. Accommodation in Reykjavik.
Sept/Day 6: Departure from Iceland. For those staying until later in the day there will be photography, at least during the morning, in the Reykjanes peninsula southwest of Reykjavik, where we’ll visit some volcanic fumaroles and boiling mud pools.
