One-day Photography Courses for the Royal Photographic Society

Photography courses run for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS)

Nigel runs occasional one-day photography workshops for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS).

They are organised in pretty much in the same format as his own courses, concentrating on day-long outdoor hands-on photography practice.

In general, they attract people who are already quite experienced photography enthusiasts, so most of the workshops are targeted at intermediate or advanced level amateur photographers.

Nigel has four RPS workshops lined up for 2017. Brief details are given below. For full information and booking follow the links to the relevant RPS website pages.

The Jurassic Coast (west)

Date: 8 April 2017

Location: Lyme Regis, Devon, UK.

The day will cover coastal landscape photography, starting with general harbour and beach scenes around Lyme Regis, followed by (as the tide drops) a walk out along Monmouth Beach to the west to photograph some of the giant fossils visible here. This will be followed by a trip to Charmouth (we’ll drive), a few miles east, where we’ll do more beach and cliff photography. The day will finish with photography in the coastal woodlands of the Axmouth-Lyme Undercliffs National Nature Reserve, just west of Lyme Regis.

Wildlife photography

Date: 15 July 2017

Location: Westcountry Wildlife Photography Centre, near Okehampton, Devon, UK.

The day will be spent with Nigel, everyone practising wildlife photography without the need to spend hours or days tracking truly wild animals. The animals at this centre are kept in naturalistic enclosures and are used to the presence of people, so finding and approaching them is not a problem. This enables us to maximise the opportunity to practise the actual art of photographing them: choosing the best perspective, capturing body language, how to cope with animals constantly on the move, photographing typical behaviour, animals in their environment, capturing personality and any animal-human interactions, for example.

Animals that are likely to be photographed include red fox, wild cat, European otter, roe deer and barn owl, among others.

Architectural and travel photography

Date: 30 September 2017

Location: Exeter, Devon, UK.

We’ll be spending the afternoon photographing some of the sights in Exeter, in what could be described as a combined architectural/travel photo shoot, photographing some of the old and modern buildings (from medieval cathedral to 21st century shopping mall) and street scenes around the city centre. For the final couple of hours we’ll move to the nearby historic town of Topsham beside the Exe estuary. The course will start at midday and - weather permitting - will carry on until dusk (approx 7pm).
