Camera Handling and Photo Composition One-day Photography Course
Fundamentals of camera handling and photography composition one-day course
6 June 2020. Brixham, Torbay, Devon
Course location: Brixham harbour and Berry Head, near Brixham or Cockington Court Garden, Torquay.
Times: 10am to 5pm
Price: £95 per person
A day of varied photo subjects, ranging from the boats and harbour at Brixham to the clifftop views and wild flowers of nearby Berry Head, or the gardens of Cockington Court. This course will give some general photography tuition, aimed largely at those struggling to get to grips with their digital cameras (DSLR or compact) and/or wanting to understand some of the most fundamental photography techniques.
We will spend the morning photographing the many and varied scenes in and around Brixham harbour, using the wide views, boats and close details as our photo subjects. In the afternoon we will move to either Berry Head or Cockington Court Garden (in Torquay), where we’ll apply similar photography techniques to plants and either coastal views of gardens.
The course will aim to teach the following skills:
- How to spot potential image compositions in a variety of scenes, whether wide views or close details, and how to perceive the ways in which these might be converted into great images;
- Understanding the concept of exposure and how to control the amount of light reaching the camera’s sensor through control of its ISO settings, shutter speed and lens aperture;
- Moving away from ‘auto-everything’ and towards at least partial manual control, whereby you make the decisions, not the camera, about how to photograph a subject;
- Some of the camera’s other important features may also be introduced, such as the histogram and exposure compensation;
- Executing the image, using positioning, perspective, focus control, use of light, and lens focal length to create simple, strong compositions.
Participants should have at least a knowledge of how to operate their own camera in order to get simple images. Beyond this, the main requirements are enthusiasm, an open mind and a readiness to learn!
Note: Since we’ll be working outdoors, what we are able to do during the day is very weather-dependent. Weather conditions may make it necessary to vary the itinerary.
