Beautiful Devon

A Portrait of a County

A new book by Nigel Hicks about Devon, southwest England.

Beautiful Devon

Beautiful Devon is a highly photographic book, largely a series of photo essays showcasing many of the county’s most beautiful places and liveliest annual events.

Intended primarily as a photographic memento of Devon, all photography and words are by Nigel Hicks. Beautiful Devon is intended to appeal to anyone with a love of Devon, whether visitor or resident, as well as to anyone with a love of evocative travel photography.

An outline of Beautiful Devon

The book starts off with an introductory chapter, the only part of the book with any extensive text, and is followed by four photo essays (with extended captions) that home in on one region of Devon.

Chapter One: A summary of the landscape and coast; some of Devon’s urban areas; an overview of farming, fishing and tourism.

Chapter Two: Exeter and east Devon, the city, the Exe estuary, the coast and the agricultural inland areas.

Chapter Three: Devon’s south coast, the hub of the county’s tourism, from Torbay to Plymouth.

Chapter Four: Dartmoor and the heart of Devon, the former’s wildness and ruggedness; the rich agricultural landscape of Devon’s interior.

Chapter Five: Devon’s north coast, Exmoor National Park, the magnificent Taw and Torridge estuary, fabulous surfing beaches, and the rugged Atlantic cliffs of Hartland.

Aquaterra Publishing

As with Nigel’s earlier book, Wild Southwest, Beautiful Devon is being produced by his own publishing company, Aquaterra Publiishing, making this the company’s second book.

Beautiful Devon will be the first in a series of Portrait of a County books. The next to come out will be Beautiful Cornwall, scheduled for spring 2019.
