Beautiful Cornwall
Beautiful Cornwall
A Portrait of a County
A new book by Nigel Hicks about Cornwall, southwest England.
Just published by Aquaterra Publishing
Beautiful Cornwall is a highly photographic book, largely a series of photo essays showcasing many of the county’s most beautiful places and liveliest annual events.
Intended primarily as a photographic memento of Cornwall, all photography and words are by Nigel Hicks. Beautiful Cornwall is intended to appeal to anyone with a love of Cornwall, whether visitor or resident, as well as to anyone with a love of evocative travel photography.
An outline of Beautiful Cornwall
The book starts off with an introductory chapter, the only part of the book with any extensive text, and is followed by four photo essays (with extended captions) that each home in on one region of Cornwall.
Chapter One provides a summary of the lie of the land and the coast, introduces some of Cornwall’s wildlife, and summarises some of the factors that make Cornwall a unique place to live in. There is an overview of Cornwall’s mining history, as well as today’s fishing, farming and tourism business.
Chapter Two is a photo essay presenting east Cornwall, covering the valleys of the Tamar and Lynher Rivers, as well as the beautiful Rame peninsula and the fishing centres of Looe and Polperro.
Chapter Three’s photo essay tours along Cornwall’s rugged north coast, taking in its stunning surfing beaches, some of the rocky headlands, and the beautiful Camel estuary, along with the town of Padstow. The latter’s annual Obby Oss Festival is also covered.
Chapter Four presents a photo essay of Cornwall’s southern side, encompassing the towns of Fowey, St Austell, Falmouth and Truro, as well as such famous sites as the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Chapter Five showcases Cornwall’s far west, covering the Lizard and Penwith peninsulas, plus the stunning Isles of Scilly. St Ives, Penzance and Newlyn are featured, along with some of Cornwall’s best beaches, namely Sennen and Hayle. Two festivals - Helston’s Flora Day and Penzance’s Golowan - are also included. A section on the Scillies introduces the beauty of these islands, particularly Tresco (including its famous Abbey Garden), and the islands’ marine wildlife.
Aquaterra Publishing
