An overview of Nigel Hicks & his work

Nigel Hicks is a writer and photographer based in Devon, in the southwest of England. Originally trained as a biologist, he began moving into the media in the 1980s while living in Japan. He subsequently became a fulltime professional photojournalist in 1990, while based in Hong Kong. For the next four years he covered travel and environmental subjects across east Asia, concentrating mainly on China, Taiwan and Japan. During this time he became well established with a range of magazines, photo agencies and book publishers, which culminated in a commission from New Holland Publishers to do the photography for a new book about the wildlife and landscape of China. Called Wild China, this was the first attempt to produce a publication on the nature of this vast country in many years. Published in 1996, it was hailed as a major success and a coup of great significance for Nigel Hicks.

Shortly after finishing this book, Nigel moved his base to the UK. Since the mid-nineties he has been expanding his client base, while continuing with a number of Asian projects. Following the success of Wild China, he was commissioned to produce a set of four books on the Philippines, all of which have been published. This Is the Philippines (a photo souvenir of the country) and Globetrotter's Guide to the Philippines came out in 1999, while National Parks of the Philippines and Birds of the Philippines were published in the summer of 2000 . At this time he also wrote and provided the photography for a book called Professional Nature Photography, commissioned by Focal Press.

Late in 1999 a film crew from  National Geographic Television made a programme about his work, which was shown on that network a number of times.

Magazine work continues, with travel and environmental stories being published in a  range of international magazines, while his photographic file, containing approximately 30,000 images covering a range of subjects from the UK and east Asian countries, is increasingly popular with publishers and advertisers. Two further books were published in 2002: a fifth book on the Philippines, plus a beautiful production, called Double Vision, about landscape photography, which he  worked on jointly with photographer Chris Weston. A further photography book, The Photographer's Guide to Light, was published in 2005 by UK publisher David and Charles.

In January 2005, Nigel made the digital leap, switching from using film to working wholly digitally. His workhorse these days is the Canon EOS 1Ds camera, arguably the most sophisticated 35mm digital SLR camera on the market.

Over the past few years, up to December 2006, overseas photography commissions have taken him to Hong Kong, Greece, Italy, Hawaii, Germany, China, Alaska, Swedish Lapland, Brazil, Borneo and Peru. Photography within the UK has included landscape and travel-oriented photography across his home county of Devon, for a large UK-based publisher, and he has also recently carried out the photography for the 2007 brochures for Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts, based in Paignton and Torquay respectively, two of southwest England's largest visitor attractions. His latest book, The Digital SLR Bible, published by David and Charles, is about to hit bookshops worldwide. His next assignment, to be undertaken in Jan-Feb 2007, is a photo shoot in Patagonia, Argentina.

Nigel Hicks looks forward to hearing from anyone who wants to make use of this imaging, whether it be from file material or through a fresh, purpose-designed commission, for publishing or commercial work.
