Who this course is meant for: Anyone who at least knows how to press the shutter on their camera to get a shot, but who wants to move beyond the hit-and-miss approach to being able to produce great shots repeatedly and reliably.
About the course
This will be a spring landscape, nature and travel photography course, aimed to coincide with the peak of Devon's wild and garden flowers, as well as the leafing out of many of the region's woodlands. Landscape and nature photography will take in some of Dartmoor's woodlands, tors, valleys and rivers, while coastal shores, cliffs, beaches and harbours will provide opportunities for travel photography as well as more landscape and nature images.
The course will aim to teach two main aspects of photography:
1. How to make the best use of a digital camera. Many people are only scratching the surface of what the new breed of digital cameras can do, as a result greatly limiting what they can achieve. I will aim to teach the use of some of the most important functions of both the digital camera and the inevitable associated computer work, functions that will explode the horizons of what you can do!
2. Compose, light, focus: the holy trinity of great photography. Teaching this threesome will aim to look into the psychological aspects of what to look for in a landscape and how to look for it. This is the art of image previsualisation, coupled with learning how to compose the subject, how to use the light provided by nature, and how to use focussing, perspective and lens angle to enhance the overall image and in particular the main subject within it.

The outline timetable for the weekend is as follows:

Friday evening |
Gather at 7.00pm for dinner, introductions and a talk/slide show by Nigel Hicks. An introduction to digital camera functions. Discussion of plans for the weekend. |

Saturday |
Early morning photography at a nearby view, followed by breakfast at the hotel, and a short intro session to digital camera functions. We'll then head out for photography at two or three locations, the sites depending on the weather. Dinner at the hotel, followed by review of the day's photography, and analysis of any digital images available. |

Sunday |
Early morning photography at a nearby view, followed by breakfast at the hotel, and then photography at one or two locations, the sites depending on the weather. Photography will finish just after lunch and, if time allows, will be followed by a discussion of the photography and analysis of any digital images available. We should finish at about 3pm, to allow time for people to hit the road homewards. |
Cost
Price for the weekend is £295 per person for single occupancy of a room, or £280 per person for two sharing, for bed and breakfast for two nights, plus dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, a packed lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and local minibus transportation. Non-photography partners can come along for the weekend at a discounted rate, and discounts also apply for participants not requiring accommodation.
