Nigel Hicks Images:
Spring landscape photography course
9-11 May 2008, South Devon.
Back to: Home Photo courses
Contact: info@nigelhicks.com

The course will be led by Nigel, who will give hands-on instruction in a range of photographic skills, aimed at honing your landscape photography.
The weekend will aim to teach the following skills:
Pre-visualisation; in other words how to spot potentially great images from among a landscape view, whether a wide vista or a small detail.
Use of a variety of techniques, choice of lenses etc to help convert that visualisation into an image.
The importance of perspective, positioning and framing in turning visualisation into a truly great image.
The best use of light in producing great images.
Adapting the types of image you shoot according to the nature of the light and weather available.
Nigel will be shooting with a digital SLR camera, but participants are free to use any kind of film or digital camera they choose, provided they don’t have so much kit they are unable to carry it in the field, or that requires too much time to take a reasonable number of photos!
It is common on these courses for participants to have quite a wide range of level of skill and experience, but this is generally no hindrance to everyone’s enjoyment and ability to learn. Nigel will not be teaching the basics of photographic technique, but will concentrate on the thought processes and consideration of the aesthetic aspects that go into creating a great image.
Discussion of technical aspects will generally be limited to how they directly impact on the composition and likely success of images shot at particular locations visited during the weekend, plus some coverage of the differences in technique between film and digital photography, in order to help those struggling with the switch to digital.
Since Nigel cannot hope to know the ins and outs of every camera model on the market, participants are expected to be familiar with which buttons they need to press on their particular camera in order to produce at least basic images!
The weekend will be based in the South Devon village of Bishopsteignton, close to the town of Teignmouth, on the northern shore of the estuary of the River Teign, two miles from the sea and between Exeter and Torquay. Beautiful coastline, hills, woodlands and much of Dartmoor National Park are all within 10 minutes' to one hour’s drive of the village. Accommodation will be in the Cockhaven Manor Hotel (see www.cockhavenmanor.com for information), an attractive inn equipped with meeting rooms as well as bar and restaurant. Breakfast and dinner will be taken here, while a picnic lunch will be provided for the daytime.
