Nigel Hicks Images:
Autumn landscape photography course
2-4 November 2007, South Devon.

Continuing our series of successful and highly popular seasonal landscape photography courses, the next event to be run by Nigel Hicks will be over the first weekend of November, hopefully timed to coincide with the autumn colours in Dartmoor’s woodlands.
So, if you feel the urge to brush up on your landscape photography skills, need practice with that new digital camera, or simply relish the opportunity to get some fresh air and exercise in the company of like-minded people, this should be a great weekend. As with all previous courses, this course will contain a maximum of 12 participants, ensuring a manageable group, where close contact with Nigel will always be possible.

Photo locations to be used during the weekend will range from the open moors and sheltered woodlands and valley rivers of Dartmoor, to the cliffs and beaches of the south Devon coast, all within 15 minutes’ to an hour’s drive away. The exact choice of locations will of course depend very much on the weather and the preferences of the group, but we will aim to provide as wide a spread of location types as possible.
Nigel will be shooting
with a digital SLR camera, but participants are free to use any kind of film
or digital camera they choose, provided they don’t have so much kit they are
unable to carry it in the field, or
that requires too much time to take a reasonable number of photos!

It is common on these courses for participants to have quite a wide range of level of skill and experience, but this is generally no hindrance to everyone’s enjoyment and ability to learn. Nigel will not be teaching the basics of photographic technique, but will concentrate on the thought processes and consideration of the aesthetic aspects that go into creating a great image.
Discussion of technical aspects will generally be limited to how they directly impact on the composition and likely success of images shot at particular locations visited during the weekend, plus some coverage of the differences in technique between film and digital photography, in order to help those struggling with the switch to digital.
Since Nigel cannot hope
to know the ins and outs of every camera model on the market, participants are
expected to be familiar with which buttons they need to press on their
particular camera in order to produce at least basic images!
The base for the course will be the Cockhaven Manor Inn (see www.cockhavenmanor.com), an old coaching house in the heart of the ancient village of Bishopsteignton, on the northern shore of the estuary of the River Teign. Situated just three miles west of the coast and the seaside town of Teignmouth, and 12 miles east of Dartmoor, the village is ideally located as a centre for exploring a wide range of moorland and coastal photo locations.
We really hope you decide to come along for the weekend, and we’ll look forward to hearing from you!
